Dentsply ProRoot MTA Root Repair Material – White (0.5g per Treatment)

Dentsply ProRoot MTA 0.5g is a root repair material specifically designed to have the necessary physical properties and setting requirements to effectively repair damaged roots. Composed of various biocompatible substances, ProRoot MTA is an industry-leading material trusted by endodontists worldwide.

One of the key advantages of ProRoot MTA is its antimicrobial property — it inhibits the growth of microorganisms, which is crucial for preventing or treating infections in the root canal system. It hardens in the presence of moisture, ensuring a durable seal within the root canal. ProRoot MTA is also non-toxic and non-mutagenic, meaning it does not have harmful effects on surrounding tissues or cause genetic mutations.

The material is vasoconstrictive, which can be beneficial for achieving hemostasis during procedures like pulp capping. It also promotes cell adherence and growth, essential for the regeneration and healing of damaged root structures, and stimulates interleukin production to support a favorable immune response.

Key Properties

  • Biocompatible with periradicular tissues
  • Non-toxic to cells, but antimicrobial to bacteria
  • Non-resorbable
  • Mineral leakage around the margins
  • Contains hydrophilic particles that set in the presence of moisture
  • Low or nearly no solubility
  • Radiopaque
  • Very high alkaline initial pH: 10.2, rising to 12.5 after 3 hours

Indications

  • Apical plug during apexification
  • Repair of root perforations during root canal therapy
  • Treating internal root resorption
  • Root-end filling material
  • Pulp-capping material
  • Pediatric pulpotomy (FDA cleared)

Advantages

  • Antimicrobial — prevents and treats root canal infections
  • Hardens in the presence of moisture for proper setting and durable sealing
  • Non-toxic and non-mutagenic — safe for surrounding tissues
  • Vasoconstrictive — aids hemostasis during pulp capping
  • Promotes cell adherence and growth for regeneration and healing
  • Stimulates interleukin production, enhancing immune response and tissue healing

Clinical Applications

Clinical research indicates that ProRoot MTA is an effective pulp capping material. When gently placed over the pulpal exposure site, it creates a biocompatible seal of the pulp. The no-shadow formula is ideal for this procedure.

ProRoot MTA is ideal for repairing perforations that result in iatrogenic conditions where communication between the pulp canal and periarticular tissue occurs. It also seals resorptive defects caused by internal root resorption to prevent further destruction.

ProRoot MTA creates a permanent apical plug at the outset of treatment, eliminating the need for interim procedures — making it an excellent material for apexification. Its excellent sealing ability and promotion of periradicular healing also make it ideal as a root-end filling material.
